Research: History of music videos

Modern day music videos compared to traditional music videos back in the 90’s has changed drastically due to the improvements in modern day technology which allows artist to add further elements in their videos in order to appeal to their target audience. These elements range from lighting, different edit styles to the ways in which camera shots are taken. These changes also allow artist of the modern day to be more artistic and creative with their music video as they use it to enhance or even reinvent their star image in hopes to appeal to their target audience.

1929: 'Saint Louis Blues' For the first time in the 1920's Bessie smith was shown doing a performance based song in a two-reel short film called saint Louis

1940: Fantasia! Walt Disney released fantasia, an animated film based around famous pieces of classical music.

1956: Tony Bennett - Stranger In Paradise
Tony Bennett is filmed walking in Hyde Park for his song "Stranger In Paradise". The single/hit was distributed on US and UK television, leading Bennett to claim he made the first music video.
1964: Songs & Moving Images - The video arguably set out the basic visual vocabulary of today's music videos, influencing a vast number of contemporary musicians etc.
1966 - 1968: ''The Monkees'' was a TV show. Each episode included a specifically made film segment that was created to accompany their songs.
  • The birth of ''Top of the Pops'' used to promote singles so artists had to create competitive videos to compete for air time.
  • Videos used techniques borrowed from film ideas. The start of The Beatles - ''Penny Lane''.
1975: Queen - ''Bohemian Rhapsody'' music video created to replace a live TV performance. Rather than doing a live TV performance where they would end up just having to lip sync. Queen did something rather different as they made what people claim to be the first music video ever made. Due to the performance on instruments and the quick shaft choreography. This enabled the music video to gain much recognition and success it deserves.

1970 - 1980: The key development of the modern music video was video recording with editing processes. High quality via tape recorders and portable cameras enabled pop artists such as ''The Jacksons'' due to them having a high budget to make their best music videos possible and is worth watching.

1981: MTV is launched. First music video aired was Buggles - ''Video killed the Radio Star''.
1984: Michael Jackson - ''Thriller'' took music video format to another level. What made this so popular is that it was a short film and a music video, which was unusual and practically unheard of at that time. Michael pioneered the way music videos are made today, and Thriller was the start of what helped pave the way for music videos. Also, the choreography is amazing, and the concept was very original at the time.
1980's: MTV and musical success...
  • Music video would, by the mid 1980's, grow to play a central role in popular music marketing.
  • Madonna owed a great deal of her success to the skilful construction and seductive appeal of her videos.
  • Although many see MTV as the start of a ''golden era'' of music videos and the unparalleled success of a new art form in popular culture. Others see it as hastening the death of the true musical artist because physical appeal is now critical to popularity to an unprecedented degree.
This music video called energy by the rapper 'Drake' is a good example of controversy. In this video drake explains how not just him but other icons have people hating on their success such as Kanye West, Miley Cyrus, or Barack Obama. what's even more controversial about this video is that not only are the icons not actually played by themselves but they're played by him because this then have an audience talking and weather the idea is bad or good in peoples eyes they will still be talking about it.

Music Videos have changed drastically over time due to the forever new changes to technology. Music videos now compared to a long time ago use conventional elements such as Editing, lighting and cinematography in the videos in order to make them appealing to the target audience. In addition, compared to a few years ago music videos are now able to be consumed through many different sources compared to the early 90’s where videos were seen in Films or on the radio.

Conclusion

This post has allowed me to learn and understand about the early years of music and how developments and changes in technology have influenced the major change in how music is produced and consumed. This post has allowed me to see the importance of music videos to present day and see through the use of conventional elements the impact music videos have on the audience.

  1. Khaled, a highly proficient post here, some important key dates highlighted in the music video history. Clear that over the last 7 decades you know some of the key events that occurred. Some personal opinion provided also on how you believe that music videos re now taking stance over the music itself.

    To improve;
-Intro: how have modern day music videos changed from traditional music videos? Think about purpose, the impact they can have etc.
-AFTER YOUR TIMELINE: who do you think made the first ever music video and justify your reasons
-when you discuss the 80's, think about the boom of controversial music videos and why this was
